Robert C.K. Smith, 87, Formerly of South Orange and Short Hills

Robert C.K. Smith of Madison died on June 29 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was 87. Born in Newark, Smith grew up in South Orange and graduated from Columbia High School in 1940. He raised his family in Short Hills and Spring Lake before moving to Madison in 2002. He had been an Eagle Scout. Smith did a post-grad year, 1940-1941, at Newark Academy and attended Upsala College in East Orange before serving in World War II as a Seabee (U.S. Construction Battalion) in the South Pacific. After the war, Smith earned a bachelor of science degree from Babson College. He worked for his family's business, Newark Special Tool Company, which specialized in precision engineering toolmaking, mostly for the aeronautical industry. Smith also continued his education at Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT). He was a trustee of Long Hill Chapel in Chatham, where he was instrumental in starting the Long Hill Christian Pre-School.
