12 Village Employees Are Given Notice
A dozen employees were given 45 days' notice on April 2, but negotiations with OPEIU are ongoing.
Though negotiations with OPEIU Local 32—the union that represents the majority of the municipal employees whose jobs are on the chopping block—are ongoing, 12 Village workers have received their 45 days' notice.
Notices were given to five employees at the Department of Public Works, one from the Municipal Court, two from Recreation and four from Code Enforcement, and recipients were informed that their layoffs would go into effect on May 16. Approval was given by the state Civil Service Commission to proceed with the layoffs on March 23.
"In parallel, there have been positive and constructive negotiations, intended to avert layoffs, with Local 32 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union," said Village President Douglas Newman, in an e-mail.
The only management position of the 12 belongs to assistant director of recreation and cultural affairs Judy Wukitsch, whose potential layoff has caused an outcry among local arts supporters. The status of her job wouldn't be impacted by the negotiations.
Another two job cuts have been recommended to the Library Board, bringing the total of proposed municipal layoffs to 14.
