Armed Robbery of Two CHS Students, Police Say
The students were on their way home from a basketball game.
Two Columbia High School students walking home from a basketball game on Parker Avenue Monday night were robbed of a cell phone by two juveniles wielding a handgun, said Capt. John Perna of the Maplewood Police Department.
The students were walking home from the high school at around 8 p.m. when they were approached by two males in their late teens near the intersection of Richmond Avenue, said Perna. One of the teens, who was reported to be carrying a handgun, asked one of the two students for her cell phone, Perna said.
After the student turned over her phone, the two teens left and fled eastbound on Parker Ave.
The police department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Maplewood Police Department Detective Bureau at 973-761-7905..

Extremely disturbing story. I would appreciate hearing from Chief Cimino directly on this incident. He seemed to be play down the uptick in crime in recent statements. We deserve some straight talk from him as to his strategies going forward. He's been given ample resources by the taxpayers- I believe we have over 50 officers and a new $25 million police station equipped with all the latest technologies, all for a small town of 25,000 population.

One thing I like to suggest to re educate the students themselves how to deter /or avoid. To my opinion, this students are SMART by giving the cell phone up. The cell phone can be replaced but NOT the life

Publicly instructing students to freely give up their belongings is short sighted. You are basically telling everyone criminal in Irvington East Orange, Newark and Irvington to come here, act tough and demand stuff from our kids. Let's just rename the town SittingDucklewood.

We currently have a group like that in the Seth Boyden area. We work closely with the police dept and our numbers are growing. It seems to be very effective and it is also a great way to bring the neighborhoods together and shows solidarity and unity. It also makes the surrounding areas think twice before they come into Maplewood thinking they can do whatever they want. We strongly suggest other sections of Maplewood do the same thing. As I said the police dept is extreamely supportive and will help you get started.
