Two Dead in Shootings Hours Apart
East Orange woman, local man are victims of daytime violence Tuesday
An East Orange woman is dead after being shot Tuesday afternoon in Newark's South Ward, authorities said. Another man was shot and killed just hours later.
Sabrina Hall, 42, was shot around 2 p.m. on the 700 block of Bergen Street near West Runyon Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Witnesses claimed the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when the shooting occurred. Hall was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made and an investigation by ECPO's Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and Newark Police Department is active and ongoing. Authorities did not comment on a possible motive.
One woman, who did not want to be identified, said Hall was a "good woman" who was often seen in the neighborhood with her young daughter.
"She's not really a friend, but I see her every day and talk to her every day," said the woman, who has lived in an apartment complex at Bergen and West Runyon streets for 11 years.
The resident said she was outside when she heard three gunshots and a man running toward an awaiting vehicle on West Runyon Street. Shortly after, a woman emerged from the apartment complex screaming, "That's my aunt!" the resident said.
Detectives were still on scene at 4 p.m. searching a dark-colored, four-door Pontiac parked on Bergen Street with its passenger-side door open.
About four hours later, around 6 pm, Jamar Cato, a 21-year-old Newark resident, was shot outside 84 Brookdale Ave. He was declared dead at the scene.
