Commuter Woes Continue, as Morning Train Reportedly Cancelled

The Thursday commute is off to a rough start in South Orange

The commute continues to be a challenge, weeks after Superstorm Sandy and a new train schedule. NJTransit reports delays on Thursday morning; readers report cancelled trains.

The South Orange station is crowded, report readers, with lines of passengers down the stairs and into the main lobby.

I take the 7:34 am train to Penn Station every morning. While the trains and platforms are dangerously overcrowded, I have never seen lines of people on the stairs like your picture suggests. The situation in your picture was caused by the train stopping on the local track while all the passengers were waiting on the express track. This has happened several times without any communication. The trains themselves are dangerously overcrowded with 8 double decker cars completely full and the isles on each level jammed with people standing as well. There are even people who have to stand between cars. Nj Transit should make adjustments and add more trains, or hire extra people to complete repairs on the Gladstone branch.

Hi Scott. I took this photo after they canceled the 6:52 train due to overcrowding and we all had to move to the express track for the 7:34. Certainly made for a frustrating commute! Here's hoping tomorrow is better. I agree more trains are necessary.

I talked to NJT yesterday. Gladstone repairs are largely complete and they'll be testing the lines today and this weekend. NJT reps are optimistic that Gladstone will be up and running next week.
