Essex County Hazardous Waste Disposal on May 2

Hazardous waste can be dropped off at a county facility in Cedar Grove.

People looking for a place to dump potentially dangerous chemicals like paint thinners and pesticides that might be piling up in their basement can dispose of them in Cedar Grove next month.

Essex County residents are invited to drop off hazardous waste at the county's fleet maintenance facility on 99 W. Bradford Ave., Cedar Grove, on Saturday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Materials being collected include pesticides and herbicides, paint thinners and solvents, oil-based paint, chemistry sets, barbecue propane tanks, pool chemicals, photo-developing chemicals, household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, car batteries, home fire extinguishers, aerosol spray paint, automotive fluids and products containing mercury.

There's no charge for dropoff, but proof of residence must be furnished at the site. Commercial businesses aren't permitted. For more information, call the Essex County Utilities Authority at 973-857-2350.
