First Candidate for Village President Announces

Alex Torpey will run for Village President

A candidate has formally announced his candidacy for elected office. Alex Torpey, 23, of South Orange is running for Village President. He is the first candidate to publicly announce his intentions. 

South Orange holds municipal elections on May 10 for Village President and three open seats on the board of trustees, each for a four-year term. 2011 candidate packets and petitions, which are available at the Village Clerk's office, are due, complete, on March 17.

According to his website, Torpey currently serves on the South Orange Public Library Board, the Citizen’s Public Safety Committee, is a volunteer EMT with the South Orange Rescue Squad and is the volunteer Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Coordinator with the South Orange Police Department.

Torpey acquired his B.A. in the Political Science of American Law and Government from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, where he served as student government president for two terms, worked for the school newspaper and radio station and founded the Pubic Safety and Health Committee, Hampshire’s tennis team and the Department of Public Safety’s student security program. He is currently completing a master of public administration program in emergency management and counter-terrorism at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Torpey owns Veracity Media, a small consulting business focused on new media and technology. 

A graduate of Columbia High School, Torpey has lived in South Orange for 12 years.
