Girls Night Out Power

Getting together is a great escape

There’s nothing like putting on a new lipstick and exchanging your mom jeans for a pair of skinny jeans to head out for an evening with your girlfriends. We’ve all heard about the studies that found that the more friends a woman has, the happier she is.

Thankfully, our community helps us nourish these friendships by giving us a Girls Night Out, aka, GNO, one night a week where we can let our hair down and connect with our friends.

Above Restaurant and Bar  in South Orange is now partnering with Robyn Ross to host a shopping night followed by drinks on Thursday nights. Who can refuse?

If you shop at Robyn Ross between 5-8 p.m., you will receive 10% off all full priced merchandise.  If you spend $100 after 5 p.m. on Ladies Night, you will receive a coupon that entitles you to a free drink at Above to be used on Ladies Night.

At Above, Ladies Night runs 5-10 p.m. It’s also buy one, get one free from their specialty martini menu, such as two Cosmopolitans for $10. They also offer $1 off regular drinks and half price on certain appetizers such as mini burgers crab cake sliders and various types of pizzas.

Stephanie Asch, a mom of one and South Orange resident, gathers her friends together for GNO a few times a month at both Coda and Above. “I love my girls and I love my nights out. I don't know what I'd do without them. A GNO is essential for my sanity,” exclaimed Asch. She also revealed her group of friend’s motto: "What happens at GNO stays at GNO!"

Mom of two Jill Mendelsohn is another fan of GNO at Above. “The menu is eclectic and you tend to get people over 30 so the bar scene has a more sophisticated vibe.”

Carole Anzalone-Newman, Executive Director with Main Street South Orange, is very happy that Robyn Ross and Above are partnering together to bring fun to the community. “Main Street South Orange always advocates group business promotions, and this is a great example. Both Above and Robyn Ross will benefit from the partnership, and their customers will too," said Anzalone-Newman of the new venture.

For the past nine months, Coda Kitchen and Bar in Maplewood offers a Ladies Night every Thursday beginning at 7 pm until closing. They offer half price on draft beer, glasses of house wine and any well drinks. Also included are half priced small plate specialties, which include bbq shrimp, cornmeal crusted calamari and quesadillas.

“It’s one of our most popular nights,” said Greg, a Bar Manager who works on Thursday nights. “Everyone seems to have a lot of fun.”

Greg seems to be onto something. Terrie Brodie, a Maplewood mother of two, considers her friends as family and looks forward to spending time with them, especially at Coda. “Coda provides the perfect spot for a fun ladies night. Comfy bar space, yummy appetizers and they know how to make a mighty good cocktail!  Put that all together with great friends and it's a good time indeed.”
