Updated: Victim's Identity Clarified in Maplewood Homicide

The victim is Victoria Carmen White, first id'ed as James White, according to the Essex County Prosecutor statement on Monday

A 29-year-old Newark resident was shot to death early this morning and Maplewood Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office say they are investigating the death as a homicide. According to police officials, the victim, first identified as 29-year-old James White, was pronounced dead at the scene at 159 Jacoby Street, which is an apartment building at the corner of Jacoby Street and Boyden Avenue.  The shooting was reported at approximately 5 a.m.

On Monday, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office clarified the victim's identity in the following statement:  On Sunday, Sept. 12 at approximately 5 a.m. Victoria Carmen White, 28, of Newark was fatally shot at a private residence located at 159 Jacoby Street in Maplewood. Information released immediately following the shooting identified the victim as James White.  

The victim's legal name is Victoria Carmen White. Following an examination by the Medical Examiner and further investigation, it has been confirmed that the victim was a post-operative transgender female having undergone sex reassignment surgery. The victim's birth certificate was legally changed to identify her as Victoria Carmen White.
