It's a Post-Earthquake Party Weekend, About Town

Raise the roof and rattle the chandeliers in South Orange this weekend -- aftershocks not included.

Feel like shaking things up a bit, now that we made it through the 2011 East Coast Earthquake?  Good news: three South Orange restaurants are hosting music, food and drink-filled events this weekend.

Festivities kick off with a bang on Friday, 8/26, when Cryan’s Beef and Ale House celebrates 29 years in business.  The revelry starts at 4 p.m. with a Super Happy Hour complimentary buffet.  All well drinks, beer and wine are $2.90 until midnight, and there will be promotions and giveaways throughout the night.

This from owner Jimmy Cryan: “Live entertainment starts at 10 p.m. with a DJ and Karaoke.  It’s gonna be a great celebration for all!”

Keep the party rocking at Above Restaurant and Bar with live music on the Rooftop: on Friday it’s Caribbean Beat with Soular Rhythm, and Saturday features the soulful tunes of singer Danny Heise.  The music is from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

In addition, Above just launched a full sushi menu.  Try the Stamina Roll (shrimp tempura topped with eel) or the Love Roll (tuna, salmon, avocado and cucumber topped with fish egg).  And don’t forget the bar is now open until 1 a.m. on weekends.

Trembling  for more?  On Sunday, 8/28 Tatiana’s Café hosts a Grand Opening with a steel drum band, DJ and samples of its Caribbean dishes.  The fun starts at 11 a.m. and the good vibrations go until closing time at 11 p.m.

As About Town reported last week, Tatiana’s is run by mother-daughter team Deborah Nichols and Dionna Wong.  Both women may look familiar from their stints at Eden Marketplace’s juice bar and Munchie’s Take a Lickle Taste, the stellar Jamaican restaurant on Irvington Ave.

“My mother is Guyanese,” said Wong, so a lot of the food is inspired by her heritage.  The man behind the stove – Chef Santa – is Jamaican.

Wong explained that she walked by the vacant space – the former location of Caribbean Cuisine – and saw the “For Rent” sign.

“I thought: ‘This should be my restaurant,’” said Wong.  Two days later, she had signed the paper work and was on her way.  Since its soft opening a few weeks ago, the response has been extremely positive.

“We’ve been getting a lot of customers who say they read about us on Maplewood Online and Patch,” said Wong.

Tatiana’s Café is located at 74 1st Street; their phone number is 973-762-2220. They are open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., seven days a week.
