Fourth of July Celebration Set for South Orange

Family fun will be the focus of the municipal celebration at Meadowland Park and the Community Pool.

Independence Day 2013 looks to be a family affair in South Orange.

The town's Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs will present a full day of free activities for all ages in and around Meadowland Park and the Community Pool. 

The pool will be open to all South Orange residents from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proof of residency—I.D. badge, drivers' license or a utility bill will work—will be required at the gate. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 10 a.m.-3 p.m. - Model Boat Exhibit at the Duck Pond sponsored by the South Orange Seaport Society.
  • 11a.m.-1 p.m. - Field events/races at Cameron Field for ages 3-12, including Flag Tag, Bucket Brigade, 3 Legged Race, Sack Races, relays and more. 
  • 12 noon to 3 p.m. - Sand Art at the pool.
  • 12 noon to 4 p.m. - Sports-themed Slide and Bouncy House near the pool entrance sponsored by the SO Parking Authority.
  • 12 noon to 4 p.m. - Photo Booth at the pool.
  • 12 noon - Ping Pong Tournament at the pool, ages 12-under
  • 1:30 p.m. - Ping Pong Tournament at the pool, ages 13-over.
  • 3:15 p.m. - Hot Dog Eating Contest at the pool.

To register for the events, send an email with either 'Races,' 'Ping Pong' or 'Hot Dogs' in the subject line. Pairings for the Ping Pong Tournament will be drawn at random at the event.
