Learn Acting this Summer from the Teachers Who Taught The Stars
Musical Theatre Conservatory is holding auditions for its summer program. The program is run by a South Orange resident.
What do Natalie Portman, Jamie Lynn Sigler (Sopranos), Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire), and Brandon Uranowitz (Baby It’s You) all have in common?
Each trained in the performing arts with either Randy Kravitz Elman or Mary Brienza when they were kids. Elman is from West Orange and Brienza is from South Orange.
This summer, a new generation of aspiring actors has the opportunity to study with these teachers at the Musical Theatre Conservatory.
Summer programs will be July 1-July 20. Geared toward developing the complete performer, the programs includes classes in acting, theatre dance, vocal technique, and song interpretation as well as stage combat, TV/commercials, voice overs and auditioning.
The Musical Theatre Conservatory, now in its third season, is offering Broadway Boot Camp (ages 8-17), Stage Door Kids ( ages 5-7 ) , and a Performing Theatre Workshop.
The students meet and train with professionals who are currently in the television, Broadway and film industries. Recent guest artists from Broadway shows have included Dwayne Clark (Spiderman, In the Heights, Smokey Joe's Café), Steven Beckler (Beauty and the Beast, The Producers). Classes are small and each student is given solo performance opportunities.
Elman served for 25 years as artistic director for Performers Theatre Workshop, a performing arts training program for young people. Brienza has held faculty positions at American Theatre Dance Workshop and Broadway Dance Center and is currently teaching at New York City’s High School for the Performing Arts.
“Summertime is a great time to try new things,” Elman said. “If you’re a singer who’d like to try a dance class, or a dancer who’d like to try an acting class, why not try it during the summer without the pressures of school and other extra‐ curricular commitments.”
