Lifelong S.O. Resident Wins The Golden Joe

3rd Annual Sloppy Joe Eating Contest Features Father/Son, Sibling Rivalries

The Newstead Nibbler proved to be no “Ordinary Joe” as he took a bite out his competition during the 3rd Annual Town Hall Deli Sloppy Joe Eating Contest.  Outlasting five other contestants, including a father/son duo and a pair of twins, Jordan Ozer was presented with the prestigious Golden Joe trophy by eating eight pieces of Joe before the song “Cotton Eyed Joe” completed.

“I grew up on a strict diet of Town Hall Sloppy Joes,” Ozer said.  “I didn’t put any immediate preparations into the actual event, I was very confident in my own abilities.  I think they are delicious, and I knew I had a lot of good faith in myself.”

Other contestants included Mike Democovitz from Atlantic City, twin siblings Stacy and Brian Marcus from West Orange and Lewis Dorf and son Russell from South Orange.

Between the Dorfs, family pride was the real prize today.  Russell, who came in second in the contest with six pieces of Joe, was crowned the best eater in the Dorf family.

“I just wanted to prove to (Lewis) that I could beat him on more than just the basketball courts.  I beat him at his own game,” said Russell.

Lewis however countered that he had more etiquette than Russell when it came to Sloppy Joes.

“Even if I wasn’t the fastest or longest eater, I was the neatest eater,” Lewis said.

Despite the families involved, the big winner was Ozer who was able to add his name to the new Golden Joe trophy.
