One Maplewood girl and her teammate are headed for Tampa, FL to compete in an American Idol style contest called “Skate for your Life” — part of a weekend-long event called the Soul Roll Invitational Skate Jam.

Julia Harvey, 16, a junior at Columbia HS in Maplewood, and Lacey Picinich, 18, a senior at Parsippany Hills High School, will be performing a freestyle/dance routine on roller skates to music from the movie “Burlesque." The Skate for your Life event takes place in Tampa at 9 p.m. on Friday, January 13. The girls train in South Amboy, NJ at the South Amboy Arena.

Both girls represent the All American Rollermagic Team, coached by Debbie Lewis, Director. They are “freestyle” skaters that jump and spin wearing skates with wheels, not blades.

Julia is skating in the Sophomore A Freeskating division as well as in the Junior World Class division this competitive season. She has been skating for seven years and won a bronze medal at the 2009 National Championships. Lacey has been competing for 12 years and was the 2010 National Champion in Sophomore A Ladies Freeskating. She skates in both Junior and Senior World Class Freeskating events, performing a short and a long program in competition.
