Not Celebrating Christmas? What's Open on Dec. 25 in Maplewood and South Orange

Places to eat, things to do on Christmas.

 

Updated Dec. 23, 2011, 10 p.m.: Just heard Bagel Chateau in Maplewood Village will be open on Christmas morning. We will add hour when we get them. AND Maplewood Theater is open all weekend.

While many in the two towns will be observing Christmas and attending various church services or celebrating with family, others will not. Here are some options for enjoying the day if you're not getting festive under a Christmas tree:

At Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange, December 25 is "Mitzvah*Bration," a day of community service and celebration. A kickoff light breakfast will be served at 10:30, followed by a variety of community service projects. The service activities will be followed by a Hanukkah celebration, complete with holiday fun including dreidl games and singing, along with a magic show, a congregational Hanukkiah lighting for individuals and families, all to be followed by that classic of all December 25 activities — a Kosher Chinese food dinner. (The JCC is West Orange is also have a special Dec. 25 celebration.)

Speaking of food, here are a few place that will be open for a bite (or a drink):

  • Ketan Patel tells us that Village Coffee Shop in Maplewood will be open on Dec. 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Bagel Chateau in Maplewood Village will be open on Christmas morning (hours to be posted shortly).
  • Mt Fuji Sushi. Open on Chritsmas, 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Wild Ginger. Open on Christmas, 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Bunny’s Sports Bar in South Orange is open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 24  and 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 25.
  • Dunkin Donuts in South Orange is open 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 25.
  • Cold Stone Creamery in South Orange is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 24 aand 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Want to catch a movie?

South Orange's Clearview Cinemas and the Maplewood Theater will have regular business hours all Christmas weekend, so you can enjoy dinner out and a movie on Dec. 25.

Bad new for foodies: Eden Marketplace and Kings Super Market are both closed on Christmas. Kings will be open until 6 p.m. on Christmas eve and have regular hours (7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 26). Eden Marketplace is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 24.

If you need that gallon of milk or another grocery or sundry, the new Walgreens on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood is open on Christmas from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (although the pharmacy is closed).
