Pinewood Derby a Blur of Speed and Style
Photos: Off to the races with Cub Scout Pack 20
The Pinewood Derby was a blur of speed and style when Cub Scout Pack 20 took to the track on Saturday. About 50 cars competed at Our Lady of Sorrows, the imaginative designs belonging to the boys, like Owen’s lunar landing, Max’s stapler, Mateo’s $100 bill, fast food like the french fry car and a fan favorite, the pizza delivery car. Traveling at 151 mph, the afternoon’s MC couldn’t help but remark, “That pizza will get to your door still hot.”
The Pinewood Derby is a favorite of the scouts. It’s spun off its own miniature racing industry. There are design plans and speed supplies, tips for brushing dry graphite on the wheels to reduce friction and special weights to increase mass. It's a lesson in science on how gravity works to make cars go faster and how friction slows them down.
Prizes will be awarded for the boys' creative car designs and speed, the Pack 20 winners announced at their Blue and Gold Dinner. Spoiler alert: While Stephen is not quite ready to divulge his speed secrets, my son's car, No. 40, a red and black roadster, nearly flew, hitting 163.5 mph on the Pinewood Derby speedway when competing with the Final Four.
