Police Blotter: Two DWI Arrests

An attempted burglary was also reported on Kilburn Place.

Thursday, August 6:

  • Police detained Randall Jones, 40, of Newark, who was stopping passersby and attempting to sell them DVDs near the corner of Irvington Avenue and Ward Place at about 12:30 p.m. Officers ran his records and found that he had several active warrants. He was arrested and transported to headquarters.
  • An iPod nano was stolen from the glove box of an unlocked gray 2002 Jeep parked in an Academy Street driveway.

Saturday, August 8:

  • An officer on patrol shortly after 1 a.m. spotted a car in front of 67 South Orange Ave. with its engine running, its headlights on and a flat right front tire. The driver appeared to be sleeping and became semi-responsive after the officer—who caught the whiff of an alcoholic beverage on his breath—spent several minutes attempting to wake him. Once backup arrived, the officers got the man to exit the car and administered sobriety tests, which he failed. The man—identified as Gary Ciancio, 28, of Greenbrook, NJ—was arrested and taken to headquarters, and his vehicle was impounded. A blood alcohol test gave a reading of 0.13 to 0.14 percent.
  • A Redmond Road resident reported that a briefcase containing checkbooks had been stolen from his Land Rover, which had been parked in his rear driveway. After notifying police, he found the briefcase on his front lawn, and nothing had been taken from it.
  • About $10 in change was stolen from an unlocked Acura RL parked in a Hillside Place driveway.
  • A large rock was hurled through the rear left side window of a green 2003 Honda Pilot parked in a Mountain House Road driveway. Nothing was taken from the car.
  • A perpetrator tried to gain entry into a Kilburn Place home by breaking and removing the screen of a front-facing, first-floor window that had been left open. The homeowner reported that nothing appeared to be missing.
