Update: Brady Could Face 3- to 5-Year Prison Sentence
Andrew Brady turned himself in at South Orange police headquarters.
Andrew Brady, who retired as director of the South Orange Department of Recreation last month, turned himself in at South Orange police headquarters on Tuesday for the alleged offense of theft. The investigation was conducted by the South Orange Police Department's Detective Bureau, New Jersey State Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Brady, 60, who resides in South Orange, was charged with theft by purposely obtaining or retaining $1,113 in cash that was subject to a known legal obligation. It's alleged that Brady, in his capacity as Recreation Director, oversaw five concerts put on by the local music collective Rock the House on March 20, April 24, June 13, Oct. 23 and Dec. 24, 2009 and was meant to have turned over half of the door receipts to the Baird; however, he allegedly never deposited them into South Orange's coffers. The alleged thefts constitute a third-degree offense with the possibility of a three- to five-year prison term.
Brady had been an employee of South Orange for the past 43 years.
The joint investigation was undertaken after detectives received information in regards to unaccounted-for funds from the Recreation Department. According to Village Administrator John Gross, allegations were brought to his attention in December, and he advised staff to contact the police department.
"The news of these charges being filed against Andy can only be categorized as tragic," he said.
