Revolution ’67 Comes to First Presbyterian and Trinity Church

A local church hosts the POV documentary and discussion

The events of the late 1960's in Newark shaped much of Essex County. The PBS POV documentary "Revolution '67" will be shown and discussed on Saturday at First Presbyterian and Trinity Church.

Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno collaborated on this documentary of the summer of 1967 Newark black urban rebellions.

Focusing on the six-day outbreak in mid-July, "Revolution '67" documents the spontaneous revolts against poverty and police brutality that grew into "fateful milestones in America's struggles over race and economic justice," according to the filmmakers.

Voices from across the spectrum, including activists Tom Hayden and Amiri Baraka, journalist Bob Herbert, Mayor Sharpe James and other officials, National Guardsmen and Newark citizens — recall experiences and offer insights.

A co-production with the Independent Television Service (ITVS), in association with WSKG, this documentary first aired on public television.

On Saturday, the film will be followed by personal accounts from members of the community who lived through the turbulent summer of '67. Questions and open discussion follow.

While members of the public are invited to this event, the 87-minute film is not for young children. Childcare will be provided, and parental guidance is required for older elementary children.
