Roundup of Village's Fourth of July Events

The festivities begin at 9:15 a.m. at Flood's Hill.

Here's a roundup of the Village's Fourth of July events, which don't include fireworks due to budget constraints. (South Orange last had fireworks in 2007, and Village Administrator John Gross said that savings amount to about $30,000).

A refreshment stand is open at the duck pond from noon to 4:30 p.m.

BICYCLE RODEO, 9:15 to 11 a.m., Flood's Hill                                                 

For children ages 5 to 11. Show your riding skills on the obstacle course. Register your bike with the police. Awards and prizes. Sponsored and run by the Parking Authority.

SOUTH ORANGE ON PARADE, 11:30 a.m., Flood's Hill                     

Individuals and Village organizations are invited to participate. Starts at the north end of Flood's Hill (Meadowbrook Lane/Meadowbrook Place). Line of march via Meadowbrook Lane to War Memorial at Duck Pond. Parade categories: awards and certificates will be given to the best decorated bicycles, baby strollers, floats, banners, costumes, group participation, etc.

OPENING CEREMONY, noon, duck pond                                              

Program commemorating the birth of our nation and Village armed services personnel. Water display by Fire Force. Participation by Village officials, Fire Force, Police Reserve, Rescue Squad and public-at-large. 

FIRE FORCE DEMONSTRATION, noon to 1:30 p.m., duck pond          

Hose line and water demonstrations by the South Orange Fire Force.

MAGIC BY JOHN BUNDY, noon to 3 p.m., duck pond

Tricks and sleight of hand by one of the best magicians in the area. All ages. Two 30-minute shows with starting times at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Between performances, our magician will stroll through the crowd performing spur of the moment tricks. 

CARNIVAL GAMES, noon to 3:30 p.m., duck pond                                         

A terrific variety of exciting games for all ages. Try your hand at the Wheel of Fortune, miniature golf, ball toss and other games of skill. Ticket required.

KEY-KO THE CLOWN, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., duck pond area                       

This zany clown will mix with the crowd, putting on impromptu shows.

CHILDREN'S RIDES, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., duck pond area                        

Don't miss the excitement of the Moon Walk and other rides.

MODEL BOAT EXHIBIT & DEMO, 1 to 4 p.m., duck pond area                

A demonstration of radio-controlled boats on the pond, sponsored by South Orange Seaport Society club members. Members will allow children under adult supervision to try their hand at operating the boats.

NOVELTY EVENTS, 1 to 2 p.m., duck pond area                                           

Old fashioned games and relays, the eerie Mummy Wrap, three-legged races.

HAMBONE KELLY'S BANJO BAND, 1 to 3 p.m., near skate house   

Don't miss their foot-stomping, sing-a-long music. A Village 4th of July tradition. The incomparable Hambone Kelly's band in concert. All ages.

BOCCE CHALLENGE MATCH, 1:30 p.m., duck pond area                 

Senior Circle champs take on the Village Board of Trustees in this 4th of July tradition. The Trustees are still seeking their first title.

THE GREAT ANNUAL EGG TOSS, 4:15 p.m., Cameron Field             

Enter as a team of two (at least one partner must be 18 or older). No hard boiled or rubber eggs allowed!
