Serious Accident on South Orange Avenue

Police and county officials at the scene.

On Thursday night, an 18-year-old man was struck by a Coach USA bus while on South Orange Avenue, according to authorities.

The man is at University Hospital but his condition is unknown at this time, said Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The prosecutor's office, along with South Orange Police and the South Orange Rescue Squad, were on the scene of the accident, which apparently took place at South Orange Avenue and South Stanley Road.

Few details were immediately known, but Carter confirmed a Coach USA bus was involved.  Staff from the Coach USA company were on the scene and a tow truck took the bus away.  The accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of South Stanley Road, near the border of Newark and South Orange.

A section of South Orange Avenue was cordoned off while the investigation took place.

There was a shoe and a ripped jacket still lying in the street nearly an hour later.  Several police cars were in the area and at least one ambulance.

Further details were not immediately known.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as further information develops.
