Shoplifter Flees RiteAid into Waiting Mercedes

The store has seen two shoplifting arrests in the last weeks, but the suspect got away.

The manager of Rite Aid told South Orange police on Aug. 27 at around 9:20 a.m., a man entered the store and began to put merchandise into his backpack.

The man, described as black , approximately 6"2" in height, clean shaven and approximately 200 lbs. fled the store. He got into a black Mercedes station wagon and drove east on South Orange Avenue.

Rite Aid has seen two recent arrests for shoplifting.

Both a shoplifter and a man who gave a false name and had an outstanding warrant were arrested in separate incidents.

Betty Louis, 42, of Budd Lake was arrested on Thursday at approximately 2:15 p.m. after she was seen putting merchandise into her bag. Louis argued against arrest when South Orange police were called. She was eventually taken into custody and changed with shoplifting and with resisting arrest.

Wayne Simpson, 43, of Newark was arrested on Aug. 15, at approximately 3:45 p.m. after a detective saw him at Rite Aid.  Police learned Simpson had an outstanding arrest warrant from Newark.

When Simpson was taken into custody, police learned he gave false information about his identity. He was charged with falsifying information, in addition to the alleged Newark offenses.

two of three makes you an all-star in baseball. Rite aid catches so many shoplifters because they use high tech cameras and facial recognition software. That is how they get the descriptions that lead to the arrest. if u are going to steal you may want to consider a different store.

Thanks to all who are astute we can stop this in "broad daylight" attempt to steal our sense of safety here. For night times it seems like there could be more lighting at the Rite Aid too - especially in the back area (north of the parking lot) to make us feel safer.
