South Orange Officials Approve Gun Control Resolution
Monday's meeting saw support of a gun control resolution for South Orange
South Orange Board of Trustees Monday approved a resolution in support of gun control, joining Mayors Against Illegal Guns in their efforts. Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a bipartisan coalition of more than 700 mayors who will work together to keep guns out of dangerous hands for the safety of their communities.
The full text of the resolution is below:
TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH ORANGE VILLAGE
RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF GUN CONTROL
WHEREAS, Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a bipartisan coalition of more than seven
hundred twenty-Five (725) mayors focused on protecting their communities by keeping
guns out of dangerous hands; and
WHEREAS, Mayors Against Illegal Guns is dedicated to making America's cities
safer by cracking down on illegal guns; and
WHEREAS, Thirty (30,000) thousand Americans are killed every year as a result of gun violence destroying families and harming communities; and
WHEREAS, as our countryman and our community are overcome with grief and
outrage by the recent tragedy and unspeakable act of violence that occurred in a kindergarten class in Newtown, Massachusetts, as well as, the many other senseless tragedies we have witnessed across the United States in recent years, for every day we wait to crack down on illegal guns, nearly 34 more people will be murdered with illegal guns; and
WHEREAS, elected officials have a responsibility to protect their communities by holding gun offenders and irresponsible gun dealers accountable, demanding access to trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking, and working with legislators to fix gaps, weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other prohibited purchasers to get guns; now
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of the Township of South Orange Village, County of Essex, State of New Jersey that it supports greater federal and state gun control measures, including but not limited to:
1. Mandating criminal background checks on all gun sales within the United States and State of New Jersey;
2. Taking greater efforts to keep lethal, military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets; and
3. Enacting measures to make gun trafficking a Federal crime.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to
United States President Barack Obama, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, U.S. House Majority Leader John Boehner, New Jersey State Governor Chris Christie, to N.J. Senate President Stephen Sweeney, to N.J. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, and to our New Jersey 27th Legislative District Representatives, State Senator Richard 3. Codey, State Assemblyman John F. McKeon and State Assemblywoman Mila M. Jasey.
