Seth Boyden Demonstration School and its principal Mark Quiles brought the beloved Dr. Seuss tale of mischief “The Cat in the Hat” to life on Friday, March 1, 2013, as the school celebrated the NEA’s Read Across America Day.

Not only did some students sport the cat's trademark red-and-white-striped hat, but Quiles suited up in full Cat in the Hat regalia. Quiles said that he decided to don the costume “after some special requests.” The popular principal was available to read in classrooms through a sign-up sheet available on the counter outside the office.

At 2:45 p.m., students from kindergarten through Grade 5 participated in a school-wide read. The entire student body went into the halls and read quietly for about 15-20 minutes. Even the kindergarten classes — normally located in portables — joined the remainder of the school in the main building halls.

The day also marked the beginning of the PTA Read-a-thon which will culminate in an assembly at the end of March.
