Nooks Arrive at South Orange Middle School

The school library debuts e-readers

The Nooks are in the building at South Orange Middle School.  The library has a collection of six Nooks, the battery-powered, portable e-readers that hold numerous books in memory.

“I decided to bring them into the school because I wanted our students to experience 21st-century technology,” explains Library Media Specialist Elissa Malespina.  “Since multiple books can be put on the device, it allows our middle school students to explore different genres of literature from popular YA like the Hunger Games Series, to the series of books written by our eighth grade English teacher Sara Griffiths, whose new book Singled Out just came out, to classics such as Alice in Wonderland and Pride and Prejudice.”

The Nooks were funded by Home-School Association money and district funds. They will be available for check-out, just like a traditional book, beginning in January. However, parents must sign a permission slip for students to borrow the Nooks; the permission slip is available here or in the school library.

Malespina is delighted to bring this new technology into the library. “I am also always looking for ways to get kids to read, so if using a Nook to gets them to read a book, then I am all for it.”
