The Race is On, About Town
Get ready for the Newstead 5K this Saturday. Plus, a local favorite gets a new name.
Ready to Run, Walk or Stroll?
Don’t forget to register for the 9th Annual Newstead 5K, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. The deadline for pre-registration, which costs $20, is this Tuesday, 9/20.
Registrations for $25 will be accepted up until the day of the race. To register online, click here.
Last year, the race drew several hundred enthusiastic participants and raised $12,000 to benefit the Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood.
Not much of a runner? No problem, there is also a 2-mile walk and a Kids Fun Run.
“It’s a very flat and scenic course, so it attracts all levels,” said race founder Helen DuBowy. “We have our serious runners who do the 5K for training purposes, a lot of children running their first 5K with a parent – and everything in between.”
The race is made possible by the generosity of several sponsors, including RegentAtlantic Capital, LLC, (the main sponsor) and lead sponsors Victoria Carter, South Mountain YMCA, Mom.com, Patti & Steve Coleman and the Hargrave-Kerns Family.
New Name, Same Great Waffles
Keen-eyed observers might have noticed that the former Bonte Café has a new sign, and a new(ish) name: The Grid Iron Waffle House.
The name change actually took place a while ago, when the eatery went from being part of a chain to being a true mom-and-pop shop. Also, owners Liz and Brian Boele recently opened a second location in Upper Montclair.
“It’s been crazy,” said Brian Boele the other day, “but in a good way.”
If you haven’t been there in a while, check out “The Grid” sometime soon. Same great waffles, just a different name!
