Town Hall Deli Will Make Way for 7-Eleven
Owner says he is making efforts to open a new location -- preferably in South Orange.
The owner of the Town Hall Deli confirmed Thursday night that the deli will move to a new location, effectively making way for a 7-Eleven to open up at the 60 Valley Street location in South Orange.
What is still unknown is whether or not the deli will remain in South Orange or move to a different town.
“We are continuing to review a variety of options, both here and in other nearby towns,” said owner Tony Wonski in a statement emailed to Patch. “It is, of course, our goal to preserve the 85-year Town Hall Deli tradition here in South Orange.”
Wonski said he is talking to several landlords in South Orange, trying to find a new location in town. He added that he is open to speaking to others who might have space available.
“I believe this move will enable additional flexibility for future growth for the Deli as well as the [liquor store] side of the business,” Wonksi said.
“I appreciate everyone's support of an institution synonymous with South Orange,” he added, “and hope to have a transition that is as seamless as possible. Thanks to everyone for their past – and hopefully continued – patronage."
Wonski does not anticipate the move to take place for at least a few months.

Just what we need - another place to by CRAP - and we now have NO Good Deli in town. We need them to move to the old Zaydes location. At least its near by and has the space.

That is a huge bummer for South Orange :( We don't need a 7-11 in SO! Even worse that we may lose a family business for chain convenience store!

Totally agree. And isn't a 7-11 already moving into the gas station on Parker and Valley across from CHS? How many does the community need??

Town Hall possibly moving out of South Orange ?? Please don't let this happen ! I grew up in South Orange, and Sloppy Joe's were always a family treat. When I fly up from NC to visit family and friends, my very first stop from the airport is always Town Hall for a Sloppy Joe ! South Orange does not need a 7-11 . Tacky.

Ach du Lieber und 7-11 store tell me it isnt so.....The Town Hall Deli one of the last special places that made south orange so special back in the day, along with Grunings...Please don't go and down with the tacky 7-11 which would certainly not be an enhancement for our town. BIG BIG MISTAKE

While I agree with the above sentiments, the landlord apparently has determined it can get a higher rent from a chain. And as much as everyone says they love Town Hall Deli, evidently they aren't making enough $ to afford the space. Capitalism can be ugly at times, but it beats the alternative.

Of Course they are making enough money the sandwiches are 20 bucks, (well spent) I cant stand the thought of a 7-11 in town, extremely disappointed at this move. BTW I think they squashed the 7-11 idea adjacent to CHS because of zoning, they would need to build a new structure and blah blah blah not happening.

This town does not need a chain store! We have this beautiful quaint town and we will ruin it with these kinds of business moves. I cannot believe we may lose Town Hall. It is such a shame that such a historic business is getting pushed out. The big problem is the commercial rents in this town! Doesn't anyone ever notice how all the interesting shops wind up leaving because of the rents. There are a handful of landlords that seem to own everything and they charge so much because they can. Then, in addition to losing stores, we wind up with a load of ugly empty spaces in town while they search for businesses who can afford theirent.
