WSOU "Defines the Meaning" of Gratitude

SHU's radio station partners with punk/hardcore music and lifestyle magazine to ship music to troops overseas.

South Orange' s own radio station wants your music. Sound unlikely? WSOU-FM, the award-winning student-run radio station at Seton Hall University, has teamed up with punk/hardcore music and lifestyle magazine "Define the Meaning" to participate in Operation Gratitude and ship music CDs to troops serving the United States overseas.

The staff of WSOU is collecting CDs from both personal collections and the radio station's music department. Donations vary from modern active rock format to personal mixes arranged by station deejays.

"WSOU's student staff has consistently taken part in community service projects and initiatives. We have sent CDs to the troops before through the Operation Metal project," said Mark Maben, WSOU's General Manager. "We are glad to continue providing music for the troops."

The partnership was launched when "Define the Meaning" contacted WSOU, as both cater to the punk/hardcore music scene. "Define the Meaning" editor Karen Mitchell spoke to WSOU's Station Manager, Brian Wisowaty, about the project, and soon after the CD donation drive began.

"I've been so proud of our staff at WSOU and how they've really stepped up the efforts to give back," Wisowaty said. "Karen was gracious to invite us to partner up for Operation Gratitude. We look forward to donating as much as possible, representing the values of hard work and generosity that are linked with WSOU and Seton Hall University."

Wisowaty added that he hopes the first few boxes of CDs can be shipped out in early August, with the goal of sending out "several hundred" CDs overseas in the first shipment. "WSOU's Operational Metal sent more than 10,000 metal and hard rock CDs to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan," Wisowaty noted. "We know how to go all out for a project like this."
