The following arrest information was supplied by the South Orange police department. It does not indicate a conviction.Frank Perez, 21, of Belleville was arrested on June 27 at 11:50 a.m. for stealing and then trying to return textbooks. Perez is charged with shoplifting seven books from the Seton Hall University book store, which he tried to return for cash.Perez was taken into custody without incident.
Shawn Thompson, 25, of Newark, was arrested Thursday afternoon. South Orange detectives determined that Thompson fled from an officer in a stolen car on June 11. At that time, a SOPD officer saw Thompson and two others using fraudulent cards to try getting money from an Academy Street ATM. Thompson and the two others saw the SOPD officer and fled, in the stolen car, into Newark.
Three vehicles were stolen and seven more car break-ins were reported to South Orange police. On South Kingman Road, a resident reported her 2003 Chevrolet was taken from her driveway sometime during the overnight hours of April 20. On Warren Court, a 2002 Dodge was taken from the resident’s driveway sometime between April 21 and April 22. A Mountain Lakes resident reported his 2002 Jeep was stolen from the Rescue Squad parking lot adjacent to Third Street sometime between April 16-April 17. Jonathan Powell, 23, of South Orange, was arrested on April 10 at 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ward Pl. and Gardner Ave. after an officer conducting a field inquiry discovered that Powell had an outstanding warrant issued out of South Orange for his arrest. A Walton Road resident said that during the overnight of April 10, someone entered his 2011 Toyota and removed $10 in cash after ransacking the inside of the car. Jermaine Williams, 39, of Newark was formally charged on March 23 in connection with the Dec. 1 burglary to a home on Irvington Ave. Williams was charged for the crime after forensic evidence recovered at the scene by detectives lead to his identification. He is currently in custody at the Union County jail. Three Newark residents, Bilal Cureton, 22, Freddie Wright, 20, and Murad Lampley, 21, were all arrested and formally charged for the carjacking that took place on Irvington Ave. on March 27. A Newark resident told police that her Samsung Galaxy cell phone was taken from Pathmark on March 20, at approximately 3:30 p.m., as she was paying for groceries. Faye Harris, 34, was arrested on March 23, at approximately 9 a.m., after officers responded to a call of a robbery taking place at the Village Smoke Shop located on Village Plaza. When officers arrived, Harris was in possession of a knife and was demanding money from the store manager. Officers confronted Harris and ordered her to drop the knife. After Harris refused to comply, the officers disarmed her and took her into custody. …
Clayton Mitchell, 46, of South Orange was arrested on March 15, at approximately 3:10 p.m., after officers arrived on the scene of an active home alarm on Berkley Ave and found Mitchell on the scene. After noticing Mitchell, officers realized he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest issued out of the Essex County Sheriff's Department. Damen Drakeford, 18, of Bushkill, Pa., was arrested on March 10 at 8:46 p.m., after officers responded to a call of juveniles being robbed by a group of teens in the area of Riggs Place and South Orange Avenue. The victims said a group of black youth, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, robbed them of their cell phones, cash and food while they were walking on Riggs Place. Drakeford was arrested a short distance away from the scene after he was positively identified as one of the teens responsible for committing the robbery. A Seton Hall University student said sometime between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on March 8, someone removed her wallet from a desk in the library. The wallet was later found in the library, stuffed into a CD rack. Cash that had been in the wallet was removed. A Church St. resident said that on March 1, at approximately 11:05 a.m., someone entered her apartment by prying open her front door. The victim said she was on the second floor of her residence and heard footsteps on the first floor. The victim believed the footsteps were that of her dog walker but later discovered that her residence had been burglarized. The burglar went through several drawers on the first floor removing numerous articles including silver coins. Paul Ciambruschini, a 31 year old Maplewood resident, was arrested on March 2, at approximately 2:30 a.m.. He was charged with possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct after officers responded to a call on First St. of an intoxicated person waving a knife while in the street. Jenna Mangini, 19, of Montvale, was arrested on Feb. 24, at 2:05 a.m., after officers were called to Seton Hall University on a report of a disturbance in a residence hall. When officers investigated, they determined Mangini had assaulted another student by striking her several times in the face. Mangini was arrested at the scene without incident and processed. On Feb. 27, between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., four vehicles belonging to South Orange Middle School employees were keyed while they were parked in the rear parking lot of the school. A contractor working for a resident on Montrose Avenue said his tools, which were kept in a garage in the house, were stolen sometime between Feb. 10 and Feb. 18. Two saws, a drill and a tool bag valued at $1,000, were reported missing. A Walton Road resident said sometime 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, someone removed jewelry from her master bedroom. The victim said her house is for sale and the theft of jewelry occurred during the open house. The victim said the items were removed from a walk-in closet. On Feb. 13, a South Orange resident said that at approximately 5 p.m., he was approached by someone on Ward Place with whom he had had a past disagreement. During the confrontation, which involved a scuffle, the victim stated that the subject pulled out a knife. However, the victim was not stabbed. Tau, the sculpture located at the duck pond and belonging to the Village, was damaged sometime prior to 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 28. Someone painted the sides of the sculpture and carved a large triangle into same. The matter is under investigation. A Crestwood Drive resident stated that during the morning of Jan. 30, she heard a truck outside her residence and when she went outside, she discovered the retaining wall at the end of her driveway had been damaged. On Jan. 21, a Seton Hall University student reported that at approximately 9:30 p.m., he was walking on South Orange Ave. in the area of Riggs Pl. when he was robbed at knife point by two Hispanic males. A Seton Hall University student stated that on Jan. 17, between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., someone opened his gym back, which was in an unlocked locker and removed his wallet. A Kingsland Terrace resident said that sometime between 7:45 a.m. and 12:40 p.m., on Jan. 17, someone entered his home and removed three laptops, a bicycle, and jewelry.
