Adults get the pool to themselves twice this summer, with the second annual Adult Swim evenings. Meanwhile, parents and colleagues gather support for Steven Cohen. The teacher's Donaldson hearing is Wednesday. South Orange has single-stream recycling, which began Wednesday. Kittens Lady Gaga and Adele Seek New Homes.  Though the forecast is for hot weather, it's always kitten season. As we head into a warm week, keep in mind that South Orange has cooling stations. South Orange celebrated the Fourth of July, basking in the heat and, for some of us, multitasking at the pool.  Yes, the water is fine and the wifi is fast! We learned where Columbia High School students plan to attend college, with an updated list that tells us how many students will attend each school. Two South Orange residents have television on the radar. Leslie Goldman was on television and at the Maplewood Fourth of July. South Orange went down to the river this week with a Monday ribbon-cutting. Tuesday saw a trip to the hill for National Night Out, followed by Rock the Hill on Wednesday, the final outdoor concert of the summer. We visited the Community Garden and saw it flourish, while Village Gardener Katie Payne told us how to raise the youngsters right (and green-thumbed!). CHS freshmen succeeded this summer, while a fellow student won a AAA poster award. We learned that the governor's proposed superintendent pay cap is both constitutional and likely to impact our district. We met a daredevil at the …
South Orange baseball players saw the thrill of victory for the U10 and U11 teams and the agony of defeat, as the Junior American League played in Denville. Around town, we checked out The Beaded Path, and checked in with Main Street South Orange, who earned national praise this week. The village considers making changes to gas lights, hoping to save money and gas.  We drove a Chevy to the West Montrose levee, and found preparations for the Rahway Greenway ribbon cutting in process. It was another warm week for South Orange. The Board of Trustees kept taxes to a simmer, while the Board of Education saw mixed results on a district survey, and mixed signals on classroom differentiation. We saw a series of three stories about wood versus aluminum bats, and a number of readers talked back on this issue. Local swimmers met Maplewood and triumphed. Your editor looked at local night ball. Austin Bommer took us backstage, while Above's new chef took us into the kitchen. Our Village Gardener went native, and we welcomed Over the Rainbow, a new column about gay parenting. The …
This week's big stories considered the pending legal action against the South Orange – Maplewood school district initiated by the local unit of the NAACP. The pending civil suit alleges discrimination in the district's "tracking" policy. We looked at the numbers to find out more. It was a hot week, for sure, especially in the arts world. Tap came to SOPAC, and JerseyTapFest organizer taught your humble editor to dance.  We saw Elvis at SHU, and Ms. Marilyn and Mr. Gray rocked the younger set at the library. This week saw South Orange coping with triple-digit temperatures. We cooled off at the library and the pool, and marveled that the Community Garden thrives despite the heat. A trip to the South Orange Seaport is a cool suggestion for next time...and there will be a next time. Camp continues around town, including a Tuscan School-based program and trips to the Turtle Back Zoo. A former SHU coach was arrested for shoplifting, while an alum was deported for spying. We looked at the governor's property tax reform, and considered the very real possibility of losing Sat. mail delivery. In sports, …
