More About South Orange Fire Department
South Orange's historic fire house has been undergoing renovations for the past six years, and senior officers and firefighters currently work out of two trailers to the side on Sloan Street. When it's completed, the modernized facility will be 3,500 square feet bigger and will have Wi-Fi, while preserving its 1920s-era architectural details. (The New Jersey Historic Trust pitched in with funding for the renovation.)
Thirty-three-year veteran Jeff Markey has been Chief for 10 years. Five captains serve under him. There's a second fire house at 36 Crest Drive in Newstead, but it's only staffed in the winter during snow storms before the Department of Public Works has cleared the roads.
