On Sunday, January 15, St. George's Episcopal Church will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a sermon by parishioner Dan Austin. Following the 10:30 a.m. service, there will be a special coffee hour hosted by the Absalom Jones Committee for Black History & Culture. The committee organizes both educational and social events with a focus on black history and culture.

More About Saint George's Episcopal Church
The motto of the church is "Our Parish is over 100 years old. Our thinking is not." You don't have to go very far back for proof. In 1993, Reverend Barry Stopfel, the first openly gay man to be ordained as a deacon by the Episcopal Church, became St. George's Pastor (he left in 1999, following a court case and national media attention).
And while it's not as historically seismic, the church's fundraising methods show the continued interest in innovation. One such innovation is the "Flamingo Flocking" efforts put on by the Dragons youth group. As part of this method, the yards of the church members are filled with pink flamingos, and members have to make charitable donations to remove them.
The same progressive spirit carries over to the church itself. It offers same-sex unions and the LGBTI Fellowship Group Amicus/Amica. Also, pre-service meditation sessions are offered in addition to traditional fare like Bible study groups.
