Board of Education Superintendent Osborne presented a proposal for Middle School Transformation in SOMSD at the recent BOE meeting.

The Board of Education will hold a public forum on the proposal on January 11, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in the Columbia High School Auditorium (following the Superintendent’s State of the District address at 7:00 p.m.). No action will be taken at this session.

The forum is one of a series of activities and events that the Board of Education is undertaking to ensure that the public is informed about the middle school proposal and has the opportunity to ask questions and share viewpoints as the Board deliberates over the future of middle level education in SOMSD.

The Board would appreciate questions related to the proposal submitted to MStransformation@somsd.k12.nj.us by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9.  These questions will help preparations for the January 11th forum.

Columbia High School (CHS) has students from South Orange and Maplewood. Dr. Lovie Lilly is the principal. Famous grads (and inductees to the CHS Hall of Fame) include Lauryn Hill ('93), Elisabeth Shue ('81), Andrew Shue ('85) and Paul Auster ('65). School statistics are taken from the state Department of Education's school report card for 2006-2007.

One of the most recent improvements to the school was converting the industrial arts section in the B-wing into a Black Box Theater used by the school's Parnassian Society for theater productions. Columbia competes in the Iron Hills Conference and is historically strong in soccer and track and field.
