Dreamcatcher will present the New Jersey premiere of Emily Davis’s "The Great God Money," March 6-22. This fantastical comedy with music was first performed in the New York Fringe Festival in 2005. Davis, playwright and director, is the artistic director of the Messenger Theatre company of New York.
In the play, Dot is an ordinary person who believes that more money would solve all of her problems. One day, after a series of seemingly coincidental disasters, she finds herself on a "Wizard of Oz"-like journey through the bizarre and colorful Land of Money. Along the way, she meets many unusual characters who offer mostly conflicting advice about how to find the Great God Money. As Dot’s adventure progresses, she comes across the Land of Extreme Gender Roles, Comfortville and the Hall of History, where she learns the origin of today’s money system in a nutshell: livestock, shells, coins, paper money.
Dreamcatcher’s cast features company members Harry Patrick Christian (Montclair), Laura Ekstrand (Livingston), Noreen Farley (Clinton), Scott McGowan (Maplewood), David Miceli (New York City) and Janet Sales (Montclair). Rounding out the cast is Jessica O’Hara-Baker (New York City), appearing for the first time with Dreamcatcher. Directing is Emily Baker (New York City), who will be assisted by stage manager Lauren McLoughlin (Maplewood).
Dreamcatcher is hosting several special programs throughout the run of the play, including a Talkback on its themes with a guest professional after every Sunday matinee performance, sponsored by the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Stages Festival. A free student ticket is available with every purchase of a $25 adult ticket at the matinees. As always, Assistive Listening devices for the hearing impaired and advance large-print scripts are available by prior arrangement, and an open-captioned performance during the run is TBA.
