CHS Gathers for Support, Voter Registration, Movies in the Park

Find out what you need to know in South Orange for Wednesday.

Patch has put together some things you need to know for Wednesday.

Columbia High School students are invited to come together as a community to talk about the vehicle accident that led to the deaths of Tamir Harry and Kevin Noel and the injuries of Rodney Lovius and Tashir Harry. A message on the South Orange-Maplewood School District website from Superintendent Brian G. Osborne says people will gather in the CHS cafeteria from 5-6:30 p.m. to talk and explore ways to support each other and the victims' families. For further details, contact the district at 973-762-5600.

Democrat Cory Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan were declared the unofficial victors of Tuesday's special Senate primary election—which means it's time to look toward the Oct. 16 special general election. If you weren't able to register for the primary and want to help choose which man will replace the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg on Capitol Hill, now's a good day to register. The deadline to do so is Wednesday, Sept. 25. If you wish to apply by mail for a mail-in ballot for the special polling, you must do so by Wednesday, Oct. 9. If you opt to apply in person for a mail-in ballot, the deadline is Oct. 15 at 3 p.m., and you must register at the Essex County Clerk’s office, 465 MLK Blvd in Newark. For more information, contact the clerk at 973-621-4921.

The South Orange Performing Arts Center, partnering with the Village of South Orange and The Baird, hosts Movies in the Park, a free, outdoor film series at Flood’s Hills in Meadowland Park. This Wednesday, enjoy a screening of Ivan Reitman's classic 1984 comedy "Ghostbusters," starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for Sept. 4. There will be two more outdoor film screenings on Aug. 21 and 28.
