Politics at the Library, 'Pirates' at OSPAC, Shorter Pool Hours

Find out what you need to know in South Orange for Thursday.

Patch has put together some things you need to know for Thursday.

If the recent special primary election didn't satiate your craving for political talk, you are in luck. The South Orange Public Library presents a lecture and discussion offering a preview of the fall gubernatorial election, which pits incumbent GOP Gov. Chris Christie against Democratic challenger Barbara Buono. What are the issues? What is at stake for South Orange and for the Garden State as a whole? Hear what Heath Brown, author and professor of political science at Seton Hall University, has to say. The event takes place Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the library, 65 Scotland Road. For details, call 973-762-0230.

It appears the weather is getting a bit cooler these days. Summer isn't over, but the temperatures are letting us know it won't be long before the season changes. So take advantage of opportunities to watch a movie under the stars while they're available. And this Thursday offers such an opportunity: It's Free Family Film Night at the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center. Showing is the saga of Capt. Jack Sparrow and crew, better known as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl." Bring the kids and have a special family summer night together. Show starts at 8 p.m. OSPAC is at 4 Boland Dr. in nearby West Orange.

Now if you really want a sign that summer is nearly over, dig this: As of Thursday, new, reduced hours are in effect at the South Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs' Peter S. Connor Memorial Swimming Pool, aka the South Orange Community Pool. The venue will be open from noon through 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. through 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call the pool at 973-378-7766.  The facility is located within the Cameron Field complex, across from The Baird, 5 Mead St.
