Newstead 5K Returns to Support Schools in September

Organizers say the race is designed to support top-notch public education for area youth.

The Newstead 5K is back for its 11th year as one of the area's most-anticipated fall events. The race, which raises money for the education-minded Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood, has grown each year, attracting hundreds of runners and lots of support from the surrounding area's residents and businesses

Last year, over 500 runners gathered and transformed the quiet streets of Newstead into a busy race course for athletes and amateurs of all ages, and organizers say $14,000 was raised to support innovative programs, advanced technology and overall excellence in all nine schools in the district.

“Last year, we had more than 50 sponsors," said race founder Helen Dubowy. "Part of the attraction is getting their names on our T-shirts that have become so recognizable in town over the years. Each year we pick another vivid color to commemorate the race and highlight the names and logos of all of our generous sponsors.

"I am so proud to witness the growth of this event," Dubowy continued. "Education is a cause that everyone can rally behind, because it’s the key to our children’s future. Nothing is more important.”

Sponsors are invited to pledge their support for the race by early August. Those wishing to run may register early or on race day and be among the many who will wear the celebrated Newstead 5K T-shirt this coming September 21.

The race begins at the South Mountain Annex at 112 Glenview Road in South Orange.  For information on preregistration, sponsorship opportunities and more, head to www.achievefoundation.org.
