Piano Project Brings Art and Music to Streets of South Orange

Six pianos, located throughout South Orange will be on display until Oct. 6 as part of a public art project.

Pianos have been placed throughout South Orange as part of public art project presented by the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC), the Township of South Orange Village, The Baird, and Seton Hall University.

Six pianos are placed around the village for the “Playin’ Around South Orange” project to engage people in the artistic process through innovative ways and transform how people relate to their environments.

“The pianos situated around South Orange are here for the public’s enjoyment,” said Mark E. Packer, Executive Director of SOPAC. “We hope that the keys to these pianos are tickled every day and that they cause people to smile, or have a moment’s respite from their daily routine, giving them an uplifting feeling, and ultimately moving them in some positive way.”

The pianos, which will be in place until Oct. 6, are located in Meadowlands Park at the Duck Pond, under the Sloan Street gazebo, in Spiotta Park, at the intersection of Irvington and West Fairview Avenues, in the SOPAC lobby, and at Seton Hall University.

The instruments were transformed into works of art by local artists Russell Christian, Dan Fenelon, Mikel Frank, Marie Glynn, and Susan C. Harris. The students of Greek Life at Seton Hall University also painted a piano, which is located on the campus in front of the University Center.
