SOMA Parents of Students of African Descent Observe 'Juneteenth'

South Orange-Maplewood group to host free Emancipation Day festivities in Memorial Park.

SOMA Parents of Students of African Descent invite the community to celebrate "Juneteenth" or "Emancipation Day" on Saturday, June 28.

"Juneteenth", marked worldwide on June 19, is believed to be the oldest celebration commemorating the end of slavery.

The free local event is open to the public and will take place at Memorial Park, near Field #5 and basketball courts, in Maplewood. There will be activities and games for families and children.

The SOMA Parents of Students of African Descent Workshop is an adult collective dedicated to the educational success and cultural grounding of children of African descent in the neighboring communities of South Orange and Maplewood.

The Workshop supports students in the South Orange-Maplewood Public School District who identify as African-American, Caribbean or African, regardless of the race of their parents or guardians.
