South Orange to Get 'FlowerBombed'

The South Orange Village Center Alliance will plant thousands of tulips to bloom in spring.

The South Orange Village Center Alliance is looking for volunteers to help plant thousands of tulips to burst out of the ground come spring and bring a smile to the face of residents and visitors.

The concept is the brainchild of SOVCA Board Secretary and the owner of Kitchen a la Mode, Ben Salmon.

“My hope is that some people completely forget about the bulbs simmering in the ground and are pleasantly surprised and reminded when they appear,” said SOVCA Board of Directors Chair Matt Glass. “We're hoping that this will be an annual event that will bring more and more people into the Village Center.”

The bulb planting party will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at Spiotta Park. The day will start with coffee and breakfast and run until 2 pm. Afterwards, a celebratory post-planting pizza party will be held at Reservoir Restaurant.

“There are several goals,” said Glass. “One, to foster community involvement and get people to work together on something we can all benefit from. Two, to make the Village Center burst with color and beauty in the spring, ultimately bringing more people to shop and dine. And three, to create buzz and an event which is unique to South Orange.”
