The Weekend: Easter and Passover

A schedule of religious services in Maplewood and South Orange.

The coming weekend contains both Easter and Passover, and houses of worship in Maplewood and South Orange are planning special events. Friday is the first night of Passover, as well as Good Friday. Saturday is the first day of Passover and Holy Saturday, when many Christian churches hold Easter vigils. Easter will be celebrated on Sunday. 

Below is a listing by each temple or church, of activities this weekend.

Good Friday, April 6th: 9:00 a.m. Morning prayers; 3 p.m. Liturgy of the Passion of Christ; 7:30 p.m. Stations of the Cross presented by our Youth Group

Holy Saturday, April 7th: 9 a.m. Morning prayers; 7:30 p.m. Easter Vigil

Easter Sunday, April 8th: Masses at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Friday, April 6th: 4 p.m. Children's Service designed to help them understand the crucifixion through the Stations of the Cross; 8 p.m. Choral Liturgy of Good Friday, which includes Veneration of the Cross, and Communion from reserve Sacrament.

Saturday, April 7th:  The Great Vigil of Easter, beginning with the blessing of the Paschal Fire in front of the church doors at 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring small bells to ring!

Sunday, April 8th:  Easter Sunday -A service of Holy Eucharist at 8 a.m.; Family Eucharist at 9 a.m.; 10:30 a.m. Choral Festival Eucharist at 10:30 a.m.

At St. George's it is a tradition that at the conclusion of the Easter service, members of the congregation are invited to come up and join the choir in singing Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Musical scores will be provided.

Our celebration of Easter will conclude with an elegant reception in the parish hall.

Good Friday, April 6th - Service of the Tenebrae at 8 p.m.

Easter Sunday, April 8th:  10:30 a.m. worship service will feature our expanded chancel choir, A-Pealing Bells, and brass.  Rev. Chris Heckert will offer his final sermon in his Lenten sermon series, “Renew,” titled “Renew our Life”, lifting up the promise of renewed life that the Easter holds for each of us.

Good Friday, April 6th: Morning Prayer at 9 a.m., Liturgy of the Lord's Passion at 3 p.m., Living Stations of the Cross by the Youth Group at 7:30 p.m.

Holy Saturday, April 7th: Morning Prayer at 9 a.m., Blesssing of the Easter Food at 9:30 a.m., Easter Vigil Mass with combined choirs and trumpet at 8 p.m.

Easter Sunday, April 8th: Easter Mass at 9 a.m. followed by a Toddler Easter Egg Hunt.  Easter Mass at 11:30 a.m.
