Fun and Worthwhile Local Events for your Entertainment

The weather forecast is favorable for the coming weekend – thank goodness!  Many of the exciting events scheduled will be held out of doors, and will be enhanced with sunshine and mild temperatures.  Bike tours, art tours, and garden tours are scheduled among races and a special children’s event called Kidstock.  For the less-outdoorsy types, we have concerts, dinners and shopping, too.  Read on for the details of these events and others, and be sure to check the Patch calendar for even more coming events.  Enjoy!

Calling all art lovers!  South Orange and Maplewood will be the place to be this Sunday when over 50 artists' studios, galleries and group exhibitions make up the SOMA Studio Tour.  Click here  for an interactive map of participating locations.  Free; Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; South Orange and Maplewood

Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation will hold its Pedaling for Prevention Bike Tour on Sunday morning, starting and ending at the on South Livingston Avenue.  Cyclists can choose a 40-, 25- or 10-mile ride through the Great Swamp Refuge and communities of Morris and Somerset Counties.  There will also be an on-site bicycle technician to make sure bikes are in the best condition for the ride.  Proceeds benefit the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas.  $50; Sunday starting at 7:30 a.m.; Livingston

Is visiting the on your list of things to do, one of these days?  Saturday might be the day!  All admission fees are waived for Edison Day, with live bands recording music onto the historical wax cylinder phonograph, and lots of activities, demonstrations and Ranger talks.  Learn about Thomas Edison and his work performed right here in Essex County!  Free; Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; West Orange

This annual event in Millburn invites runners of all ages to for a morning of races.  The 4-Mile Race has categories for Elementary, Middle, Senior High School and ages: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 plus.  The Youth 50-yard Dash has categories for ages 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11.  Trophies and award ribbons for winners, plus refreshments for racers will follow.  $15 for 4–Miler, youth races are free; Sunday at 9 a.m.; Millburn

The will host its Annual Spring Benefit Friday evening, featuring Russell Thompkins, Jr. & the New Stylistics. The Stylistics’ original lead singer, Russell Thompkins, Jr., will lead the new group through classic hits such as “You Make Me Feel Brand New”, “Stop, Look, Listen”, and “Break Up to Make Up.”  $55; Friday at 8 p.m.; South Orange

Temple B'nai Abraham’s Teen Tikkun Olam Group is raising funds in support of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for the Neuro Oncology Research Fund in memory of Jill Holtz.  The high-school age group will conduct a walk-a-thon at The Livingston Oval, complete with a DJ, magician, face painting, and local vendors.  Admission includes a T-shirt, slice of pizza and a drink.  $15 (under 5 free); Sunday at 2 p.m.; Livingston

The West Orange African Heritage Organization will hold their annual Men Who Cook fundraiser at St. Joseph’s Church Sunday afternoon.  Fun for the entire family, the event includes top chefs, entertainment, face painting, art activities and games.  Proceeds benefit the Thomas Holcomb Scholarship Fund. $30 at the door and $5 for children under 10; Sunday at 3 p.m.; West Orange

South Orange Maplewood Bicycle Coalition (SOMbike) invites cyclists to a bicycle tour of the oldest houses in Maplewood this Saturday.  Meet the group at the NJ Transit parking lot on Baker Street, and enjoy a morning of biking and history.  Free; Saturday at 10 a.m.; Maplewood

’ flowers are in bloom and the various scents waft through the grounds.  Enjoy a tour focused on the most fragrant blooms found throughout Greenwood’s 28-acre landscape.  Free for members, $10 for non-members; Saturday at 10:30 a.m.; Short Hills

Music, dance, a bounce house and face painting – Kidstock promises an afternoon of fun for children at .  Adults can learn more about Mothers & More, visit the sun safety table, and get a free tote bag, while the kids enjoy musical performances from Sister Sing Sister String and StingRay of StarFish, and a show by a student dance troupe from Lydia Johnson Dance. $5 per child, adults free; Saturday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Maplewood

The Council 3533 will hold a beefsteak dinner on Saturday night to raise funds for their Tank Pull Team.  What, you may ask, is a Tank Pull?  Just what it sounds like!  Grab a rope and drag an army tank past the finish line.  Click here to see a video of last year’s tank pull.  The pull benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. If there is room in your home and your heart for another family member, consider visiting the West Orange Animal Welfare League this Saturday when they hold an open house at the Watchung Avenue animal control facility.  Dogs and cats in need of forever homes will be available to meet you.  Free; Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; West Orange

Classical music lovers can enjoy a concert at by the Maplewood-based Society of Musical Arts, titled "National Monuments:  Sibelius & Beethoven".  Violinist Brennan Sweet, the Associate Concertmaster for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, will be featured in Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor.  Free; Sunday at 3 p.m.; Maplewood

The season is winding down at Fabulous Finds, the boutique of , an organization that provides new prescription eyeglasses for the poor living in the United States.  The volunteer staff is cutting prices to move this year’s merchandise before the new summer stock comes in.  So find that unique necklace or ring, crystal vase, watch, silver piece and so much more at lower prices!
