Movies in the Park Coming to South Orange

South Orange residents get to choose the comedy, action and drama films to be screened.

The South Orange Performing Arts Center, in cooperation with the Village of South Orange and The Baird, is bringing a new, outdoor film series to town.

Movies in the Park will take place at Flood’s Hills in Meadowland Park. As for the films to be screened, that's being left to the public, which will decide what movies will be shown.

The first screening takes place Wednesday, Aug. 14th and others will follow on the next two Wednesdays, Aug. 21 and 28. In case of inclement weather, a rain date will be held Sept. 4.

To vote for your favorite films, visit the online SOPAC survey page. There are candidates in three categories:

  • Comedy: Big (1988), Ghostbusters (1984), The Goonies (1985), Monsters Inc. (2001), Night at the Museum (2006)
  • Action/Adventure: Back to the Future (1985), Jumanji (1995), Karate Kid (2010), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Princess Bride (1987)
  • Drama/Classics: Akeelah and the Bee (2006), Casablanca (1942), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Field of Dreams (1989), Rear Window (1954).

Voting ends Tuesday, July 30, and the selected films will be announced Wednesday, July 31 at Concerts in the Park.
