'Spiderman' Actor to Share Craft with Budding Performers

Local Broadway stars will spend part of the summer teaching at the Musical Theatre Conservatory.

South Orange resident Dwayne Clark is thrilling Broadway audiences eight shows each week in Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark. But between June 25 and July 13 he’ll take time from his busy schedule to share his expertise with aspiring performers as a guest artist with Livingston-based Musical Theatre Conservatory this summer.

 “Besides Spiderman, Dwayne has been in a string of great shows – Urinetown, Tarzan, In the Heights,” shared MTC’s artistic director Randy Kravitz Elman. “Our students really get inspired by working up close with someone succeeding in the way they hope to some day.”

Two other local residents with Broadway bona fides are on the Musical Theatre Conservatory summer faculty as well. Steven Ted Beckler of West Orange (Beauty and the Beast, The Producers) teaches Scene Study and Stage Combat. Liz McConahay Wanfried of Westfield (Titanic, The Full Monty, Cabaret) will guide students in Audition Preparation.

“These terrific Broadway professionals are right in our backyard and they’re excited to be working with young people who love theatre,” added Elman. “Our desire with Musical Theatre Conservatory is to give students top-quality performing arts training. Having working artists on the faculty helps insure we meet our goal.”
