Windsor Healthcare Sponsors Second Wind Tour on Reinventing Elder Care

On Wed., April 2, the NJ Performing Arts Center will be the site of The Second Wind Tour two-act presentation, offering the people of New Jersey powerful insights into more deliberate, deeper, and connected ways of living and working.

Dr. Bill Thomas, one of the most innovative and creative thinkers working in medicine today, will be joined in a community and media briefing and then on stage by Batsheva Katz, vice president of Windsor Healthcare Communities, the New Jersey sponsor for the tour, in partnership with AARP’s Life Reimagined, Capital Impact Partners, and Merrill Lynch. Windsor Healthcare Communities is New Jersey’s leading provider of progressive, person-focused long-term care through its nine homes located throughout the state.

Inspired by Thomas’ new book examining the baby boom generation’s reluctant generational second coming of age—“Second Wind:  Navigating the Passage to a Slower, Deeper and More Connected Life” (published by Simon and Schuster March 11 and named by Publisher’s Weekly as a Top 10 Social Science book of 2014)—the Second Wind Tour will visit 25 cities on a national bus tour. Newark is the third stop on the tour that starts March 31.

"The Tour is really a companion to the book’s ‘second wind’ theme in that it challenges the conventional narrative of decline in mid-life and beyond,” Dr. Thomas said. “I want people to see, hear, feel, and connect to the power that arises from finding a 'second wind' in life."

Katz added, “The Second Wind Tour is about reimagining elderhood --  the next stage of adulthood. In our homes at Windsor Healthcare we create an environment that allows our elders to reimagine this next stage of life. We want to enable all residents to live this stage of their lives to the fullest.”

In Newark the community and press are invited to the noon briefing hosted by Dr. Thomas and Ms. Katz. They are also invited to the Second Wind Tour’s unique "non-fiction" theater experience blending theater, video, and music, starting at 1 p.m. Both events will take place at NJ PAC, 1 Center St., Newark.

Act One will consist of five fast-paced theatrical monologues featuring a cast of speakers including Dr. Thomas, renowned consumer health expert and TV personality Dr. Janet Taylor, and Ms. Katz, who brought person-centered care to Windsor Healthcare’s communities and is overseeing its adoption at all nine of its homes.

The second act blends the illumination of the deep connections between music, identity, and memory in the form a “marvelous surprise” documentary film preview by director Michael Rossato-Bennett followed by a live musical performance by Musicians for World Harmony Founder Samite Mulondo. The film preview is an excerpt of the award winning documentary titled “Alive Inside.” It's based on a program by Dan Cohen called “Music and Memory” using iPods to stimulate memories for people living with dementia. All Windsor Healthcare Communities’ homes have this program in place.

“In Second Wind (Simon & Schuster; March 11, 2014), Bill Thomas goes deep inside our culture. Like the best kind of doctor, he evaluates the toll our hurried, quantified, and driven lives have taken on us before he suggests a new way forward.  He'll challenge the way you think about your future. And you'll want to make the journey with him."
