Snow-Induced Friday Closures

Local schools are closed—what else?

I read a post on Twitter by a South Orange resident saying he measured 14 inches of snow as of 8 a.m.—has anybody else taken a yardstick to it? I also heard that Cait & Abby's was open this morning as usual, serving customers whose trains were delayed (nothing beyond 15 minutes, I'm told).

Local schools are closed (the call went out last night), and the county has declared a snow emergency, calling for county roads (Irvington Avenue, Valley Street, South Orange Avenue and Wyoming Avenue) to be evacuated. Cars parked there are subject to towing and ticketing.

NJ Transit suspended all bus operations in northern New Jersey. As of 8 a.m., the FAA reported that Newark Airport was experiencing gate delays of 15 minutes or less, though they suggested checking with carriers about individual flights. (Thanks to Mary Mann of Maplewood Patch for that info.)

Here are closures we're aware of:

  • South Orange Public Library
  • Saturday Adult School classes have been canceled.

Update (12 p.m.): NJ Transit is advising that rail service will be modified Friday afternoon due to low ridership. Trains may be combined and/or canceled. Check www.njtransit.com for service info.
