Community Corner

Know-Nothings in Newark

Join Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE) for
a presentation in the Irish Studies Discussion Series by two scholars of Irish
America:  Reverend Augustine J. Curley,
O.S.B. and Paul Ferris.  The presenters
will share their knowledge about the 1854 Know-Nothing riot in Newark.  They will explain the motivations behind this
attack on St. Mary’s Church, including general anti-immigrant sentiment, as
well as the specific effects that this attack had on the Irish-American
community in the area.  They will also explore the press coverage of the
Know-Nothing riot.  This event is free
and open to the public.
