Seton Hall Women's Conference

Nisha Varia of Human Rights Watch
and Choreographer/Artistic Director Carolyn Dorfman are among those featured at
the 2014 Seton Hall University Conference on Women and Gender, entitled
“Challenges, Opportunities, Possibilities,” on Friday, March 28, at 400 South
Orange Avenue, South Orange.

Newly housed in the Women and
Gender Studies Program, the conference will take an academic approach to gender
issues. The conference offers a range of presentations by scholars, students,
and professionals on issues involving gender and women. Continuing the
tradition of openness established by earlier women’s conferences at Seton Hall,
this year’s conference organizers, Dr. Vanessa May and Dr. Karen Gevirtz,
welcome the University community and the general public to explore and discuss
a variety of topics. Dr. Gevirtz notes that, “We want to gather professionals
in the field of women and gender studies to share their thoughts and insights and
infuse these ideas with experience gained in their professions.”

Among the topics, are: Women at Seton Hall Past and Present; the
Politics of Legislating Marriage; Representations of Race and Gender; Women at
Work; and Gender and Literature. Discussions include a comparison of Nazi and
Jim Crow Cinema, Women in Wartime, The Lady or the Zombie, Glass Ceilings,
Working Women at Hershey’s Chocolate Factory during the Great Depression, and
Jane Austin.
