Highlights from the spring semester at the Adult School

The South Orange-Maplewood Adult School’s spring semester catalog is out and it’s chock full of fabulous classes. Below are just a few highlights that are starting early in the semester. Basket Weaving 101. Personalize your home décor with a unique basket that you will weave out of wood! LESLEY SCHIFTIC will teach beginners how to make a magazine holder, waste paper basket or catch-all basket; your creativity will fashion the look, pattern and height of your basket and at the end of the course you will have a one-of-a kind wooden woven basket to take home. Course: 0044. Fee: $35, plus $20 material fee payable to teacher first night of class. Two Thursdays, Feb. 28 & March 7, 7:30-9pm, Columbia High School, room D101.

Who’s Afraid of Opera? If you feel intimidated at the thought of attending an opera, fear no more. International mezzo-soprano LORI BROWN MIRABAL will offer a fun and comprehensive overview of opera. Also, the course will explore the anatomy of Richard Wagner's compelling opera Parsifal (students can attend a Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast of this opera on March 20th). The course will culminate in a post-performance pot luck chat. Course: 0022. Fee: $60. Class begins on February 26 and will run for four Tuesdays from 7-8pm at Columbia High School, room D100. Tuition does not include admission to the Met HD Performance.

Writing for the Web. ALAN GERSTEIN will offer insider tips on website structure and function, how to develop a content strategy, the qualities of good Web writing, and the ever-evolving adventures of designing content for viewing via smartphone, tablet, or laptop/desktops. Course: 0058. Fee: $90 (Early Bird discount: $81). Class begins on February 26 and will run for four Tuesdays from 7-9pm at Columbia High School, room B301.

Violin for Adult Beginners. Learn basic violin positioning, technique and some pieces to develop your ear and make beautiful music. A great class for parents of Suzuki students! Please bring your own instrument to class.  For ages 14 and up. Course: 0136. Fee: $85. Class begins on February 27 and runs for six Wednesdays from 7:15-8:15pm at the South Orange Middle School, room 283. Text, approx. $10.

How to Read Music. Learn how to read music, including rhythm, pitch, key signatures, meter and notation with PATRIZIA CIOFFI, member of the National Opera Association and consultant/fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts. Class will include exercises in intervals, melodies, simple harmonies, sight singing and ear training. This class is especially helpful for students taking JOY OF SINGING. Course: 0132. Fee: $80. Class begins on March 5 and runs for eight Tuesdays (skip March 12, 26 & April 9) from 6:15-7:10pm at at Columbia High School, room C237. Required text approx. $13.

Joy of Singing. Develop your voice, extend your range and learn to project better with PATRIZIA CIOFFI. The instructor uses classic Italian bel canto/beautiful singing techniques to emphasize correct use of breath, compression, articulation and interpretation of music. Students who do not read music are encouraged to enroll in HOW TO READ MUSIC. Course: 0133. Fee: $127. March 5 and runs for eight Tuesdays (skip March 12, 26 & April 9) from 7:10-8:50pm at Columbia High School, room C237.

Be Your Own Film Critic. In this course, JOYCE KAFFEL, film/arts writer and former instructor in communication skills will give an overview of the elements of film criticism before having participants engage in informal discussions based on their opinions of current films (to be assigned). The course will consist of four classes, as well as the viewing of four films (one assigned at the end of each class). Participants can view the film with the group at a local theater or see it on their own.
Course: 0017. Fee: $55, plus movie fees at theaters. Eight Wednesdays, March 13, 27, April 17, May 1, 7-8:30pm, South Orange Middle School, room 244 (in class) and March 20, April 3, 10, 24 (film times vary but will be planned for 7pm showings in theater).
