MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN

July is Make A Difference to Children Month, a time for adults to focus on making a positive difference in the life of a child.

This is especially important at a time when children in the United States are increasingly exposed to violence in their everyday lives.  The National Center for Children Exposed to Violence estimates that as many as 10 million children annually may witness or be victims of violence in their home, community or school yard.  This has a devastating impact on emotional and social growth, resulting in increased depression, anxiety, anger, substance abuse and poor academic performance.  Children exposed to violence can also become violent themselves increasing the likelihood of involvement with the juvenile justice system.

How can you make a difference in the life of a child?  Here are some thoughts:

  • Do something special with a child this summer and have fun
  • Unplug, go outdoors and enjoy nature
  • Give the children in your life a hug each day
  • Praise their success
  • Be a positive role model, knowing that your choices impacts theirs
  • Volunteer or give to an organization that helps children.
FAMILYConnections is an Essex County non-profit agency making a difference in children's lives every day, helping them overcome the impact of violence, abuse and neglect.  We succeed through art and drama therapy, innovative counseling, family support and education.  We also operate year-round programs in area high schools and middle schools, helping teens deal with the challenges of growing up.  These programs provide on-site mental health counseling, life skills training, academic support and afterschool enrichment.  To learn more, please visit:  www.familyconnectionsnj.org.

Remember, there is no better time than the summer to make a difference in the life of a child.
